You might call it “The Purpose-Driven Flute”.
“H-e-a-r-t” has an “ear” in it. That's no accident.
When I was growing up, school music was “See notation, place fingers according to notation, and the music will be right.” Then, in college, they started to teach old, disused ears to understand pitch relations! Whoah, wait a minute! Backward!
First we want to share good sounds — from the heart.
Then we understand what we're hearing — like knowing how red, blue, and yellow work together in painting, and circles, squares, and triangles.
The rest is easy — and much easier on the ears!
Some ways of teaching don't let students touch an instrument during an initial two years of ear-training. In my studio we learn it all at once If you can hold a flute, great. I’ll teach you healthy, effective technique.
But we'll remember our why…and play.
